Penang Awesomeness

I know it's been quite some time since I came back from Penang but here are some of the places I went and did and I just thought I would like to pen this down. haha So, I had an awesome time in Penang for one week, the land of history and food.

First stop was Bukit Mertajam. When we reached, Pey Si brought us for supper and I learned that 'Mamak' doesn't apply in Penang. They have noodles or fried kuey teow and all those heavy meals at night. How could they sleep after that? lol But they are all good food. The next day, we had some nice food for breakfast too at the same place. Then we just walked around in Jusco and watched Harry Potter. We didnt do much cos we're heading to Penang island that night itself.

There, we met up with Vern and so nice of her to host me and CK for the rest of our trip. It's just all about movie and food marathon-ing. lol. I was in Penang 4 days earlier before MNC and had the longest movie marathon I ever had so far. haha Thanks to Vern and CK. It's like we've watched almost all the movies in the theatre except for the cartoons xP and yes, we still didn't get to watch Rapunzel haha

Apart from that, Vern brought us around Georgetown area and we just walked and walked and walked, learnt a history or two about Penang and it was cool cos I never get to see the heritage side of Penang though I've been there like so many times. The buildings there are what I like most, old and small and u know a sense of vintagy just like Malacca. I still love the Jonker Street =) I couldn't really count all the nice food I had in Penang and too bad I don't have a camera to snap all of those. And seriously I kinda miss the food there a bit. Here are just some googled images of the places we stopped by (in no particular order).

One of the places we visited, the Khoo Kongsi Association. I'm pretty amazed by their detailed stone carving all over the building. Every corner has its own story.

This is the Penang Museum (not sure what name). Here is where we learned of all those Penang history where Francis Light bla bla and there's all those antiques displayed. We even played congkak and the traditional dam before we leave xD

We had a good peek inside the Church of Assumption, one of the oldest church in Penang. They still have this old pipe organ in the church. would love to see the pipe organ being played one day. The picture above is the shrine in front of the church where people kneel and pray.

Next up is the Kapitan Keling Mosque. Apparently, females have to wear a robe before entering the holy place. We just walked around it to have a look. They even have a small pool to wash their hands or legs or body maybe.

Beside that mosque is the famous Nasi Kandar Beratur (what a name rite xD) we had our lunch there though it is more famous for the 10pm nasi kandar. According to vern, there will be a long queue at night just to eat that nasi kandar. Indeed, the name "Beratur". I'm just curious how scrumptious the rice can be.

The Kuan Yin Temple just across the China Street which is believed to have its own history being built there (I kinda forgot haha) It is one of the oldest Chinese temple in Penang, established around the time when Francis Light landed in Penang with the Chinese community that came with him.

One of the story from what I recalled from Vern is that Francis Light actually cannoned some dollars into the jungle/swampy area (now with all the streets) so that people will go in search of the money and in a way to clear off the land faster. I thought that only happen in cartoons. haha

Next to the China Street is the Indian Street. There are many small stalls along the road selling sweet delicacies and we bought one of the famous kuih (which I forgot the name), something like currypuff but in triangle shape. lol It tasted not bad.

There are quite many stalls selling all those sweet stuff.

This is the Indian temple that we visited (I didnt know the name). We wanted to catch the scene where they had their prayers but we kinda missed it. So, we just went in to have a look and guess what? we had our foreheads smudged with some white powder (it was cow dung according to Vern) and were asked to donate for that. And the awesome me just paid the guy RM10 for ntg. lol Alright, maybe it's sort of a donation that I need to do.

We stopped by the Clan Jetty as well. There's like so many clan jetty e.g. Chew Jetty, Lee Jetty, Tan Jetty or even Mixed Clans Jetty xD The one we went were Chew Jetty and Lee Jetty I think. haha forgot. The wooden was shaky and u know unstable, you might just fall off if you're unlucky enough to step the wrong wooden plank. who knows.

Across the jetty along the roadside, there's this lorry selling ice jelly drink that I like. It's sweet and icy, good for a hot sunny day. In it were some jellies, longan and a small piece of lemon that add the sour twist to the drink. It was good. =)

We stopped by Esplanade and also the Padang Kota Lama where we had a little fun with the Boomerang. It was cool but not easy to have it turn back to you. haha

So, that's just practically the places that I went. That didn't took us quite long, not even half a day. haha And then, we're back to our movie marathon-ing again. The rest of the days are MNC and indeed I had a great time too especially fellowshipping cum supper-ing on almost every night with all the Hope Church people haha

I would say Penang is really a nice place to be at and I really l.o.v.e ♥ the atmosphere, the food, the beaches, heritages and everything. I'll be back xP
